Minutes of the 22 February 1998 KLUG meeting
Attending: Smith, Brown, Scherbinski, Chio
This was an informal meeting, no planned topic., started at 3:00 PM
Our next formal meeting, is being planned for...
15 March 1998
The next informal/new users, or working group meeting, will be held
1 March 1998
The last week marked the rollout of the mailing list server (installed and
maintained by Scott Yellig), on a new machine, provided with work done by
Bruce Smith. During the week prior to the meeting, the contents of the web
site was copied over to the same machine. Bruce and Robert have put a little
work into the web pages, expanding them and improving the content in several
ways.
The informal topic of the meeting became the new version of the web site,
and we took a few minutes to walk through the site using a web browswer on
one of the PnU workstations (Robert has access to the PnU LAN, as a consult-
ant with PnU). After the short walk through we sat to talk about how the web
site can evolve.
SOMETHING YOU CAN DO
We interrupt these minutes for the following news bulletin:
YOU to do the same thing! Here's the URL:
http://klug.armintl.com
Look over the site, these notes, and let us know what else we can do to im-
prove the site. Remember, this is our site, so anyone who wishes to improve
it will not be turned away! Implement your designs, and we can throw it up
and see what people think of it. This a also a great way to show what you
can do with HTML, Java, or other web facilities.
Thank you, we now return to the minutes, which are already in progress :)
Some of the points brought out about the web site as it stands, at the above
URL:
- The home page itself is too wordy! Let's break it up into sections, and
link to each section from the home page.
- The presentations list should become a table.
- We need a list of future events, so everyone can see what's
coming up.
- More personal information on presenters, such as backgrounds,
links, etc.
- More links to other Linux sites, or a separate "links" page.
- Links to good articles, news item, etc. about Linux.
- A section on the site about what a new user NEEDS to get started with
Linux.
Other ideas are welcome, as are more hands to help with any or all of this.
Note that the "OFFICIAL" web site is still being administered by Mike List
at:
http://www.net-link.net/~troll/klug.html
Chris asked Bruce how the title graphic was made, and Bruce said that it was
done with imagemagick (which ships in several Linux distributions), Robert
used xv on some of the icons, and has been experimenting with an animated
GIF editor as well.
The next step with the site is to break up the one large directory of files
the constitute the current site into smaller subdirectories, probably refect-
ing the structure of the site itself. This should not take long, and Robert
volunteered to to do this.
The notion of improving and reorganizing the home page was picked up by Steve
Scherbinski, who may have something for us in "a week or so".
Other activies proposed:
- For the informal meeting times, an "installation party". New users
bring in machines, and we install Linux on them -- together!
- Public installation sessions -- at Rolins bookstore, for example.
Steve said he would look into this and report back.
We discussed a number of other minor topics and adjourned at about 5:30 PM.

Since the meeting, it's been proposed that anyone who does a presentation at
a KLUG meeting will receive personal web space on the KLUG machine.
Also, we are starting to think seriously about making the new URL the public,
or official, web site for the group. We see this as a period where we notify
sites that have the current URL posted, making sure they switch, then posting
a forwarding link on the old site. The last step is at least a couple of
weeks away.
See you next week!
We have a few options for next week:
A "new user" orientation and Linux install meeting.
Repeat a presentation.
Brainstorm session on activities.
Your preference... what do YOU want to do next week?
See you there!
