Linux Sells

I just read an article in "Performance Computing", formerly "Unix
Review". And they had a report on the results of IDC's market study
(International Data Corp) on the Unix and NT market. These are the people
used by all the big wigs like IBM and Microsoft to plot stratagies.

They claimed that 200,000 "revenue-producing" Linux server class machines
were shipped in 1997. And 2,000,000 (yes that 2 million) unit of
"revnue-producing" Linux desktops were shipped in 1997, up from .5 to .75
million in 1996.

I don't know how they come up with these numbers but they seem pretty
impressive to me.
