Does it still involve a subscription service?  That really raises the
cost.

I have a friend-of-a-friend who build one with a windows box.  We
watched a DVD at their apartment,  I hope the Windows DVD player doesn't
suck that badly in general.  It artifacting like crazy all around the
border of the screen.
