Why use vi
installed on every unix machine I have ever used, which include:

• Solaris
• IRIX
• LINUX
• A couple of BSD OS's
• Many that I have not used.

Choices in versions of vi.

• origonal vi is not free.
• several free clones.
• vim, probably most common on linux machines.
• elvis and elvis-tiny
• nvi
• couple others.

Three modes in vi.
vi has three modes which allow different keys
to bind to commands without a meta key, as well
as allowing vi to operate as a line editor.
